"Is it 5:00 yet?" Office Questionnaire
Food
What is your must-have office snack? I'm all about snacks at work, so I have a variety: grapes, clementines, yogurt, Chex mix, FiberPlus bars.
How many cups of coffee do you drink every morning? I don't drink coffee. I spend most of the day refilling my water bottle. (And then making trips to the bathroom).
Caf or decaf? Right now, it would be decaf since I'm pregnant.
What’s your favorite lunch spot when eating out? I hardly ever eat out for lunch (there are people I work with who eat out every day, and I don't know how they afford it!). When I do eat out, it's Subway or Chic-fil-a most of the time.
Style
What’s your favorite outfit to wear to the office? A skirt with a comfy top and flats or sandals. Once upon a time I HATED skirts, but now I love them!
Do you keep a sweater at work at all times? Yes, a sweater is a must at my office, and I wear mine almost every day.
Whose style do you most admire at work and why? There's a legal assistant who works on the other side of the building that has the most posh, sophisticated style. I envy her outfits pretty much every day.
Miscellany
Do you go with reusable or paper/plastic for your lunch sack? When I bring my lunch I usually bring it in a WalMart plastic bag. Fancy, huh?
Do you listen to music at work? Just the music that comes out of the office speakers. I am so sick of the station because they play the same songs every day, multiple times a day.
What’s your desk décor like? In a word: boring. I don't really have anything personal on my desk besides a desk calendar with word puzzles and a pen cup that I got from Kenya (and which I doubt was actually fashioned to be a pen cup, but that is how I use it).
If you also work in an office, fill it out and then let me know that you did!

Pregnancy Is Messing with My Mind
Case in point:
Last night I decided I would go for a 30-minute walk around our neighborhood loop. It was relatively pleasant outside compared to some of the other nights we've had, and I was just itching for some exercise, so off I went. When I walked out the door, my watch said 7:40. Great, I thought, at 8:20 I'll have my 30 minutes in.
Does anyone else see the problem with that math? I didn't, until around 8:15. Then I realized that in fact my planned 30 minute walk was a 40 minute walk. By that time, I had already started my third loop around and so I just finished that loop and ended up walking 45 minutes instead of 30! I even jogged for 12 minutes, too!
I suppose in this case, my scatterbrainedness (look, I made up a word!) had a positive outcome in that I got more exercise than I intended. Let's hope that trend continues. :)

In Which I Blog About Hair
But friends, I am in a hair rut, and I need your help.
Currently, my hair is the longest it's ever been, but it doesn't really look great. See?

I don't really know what to do with it, and a lot of the time it ends up in a ponytail, which is less than glamorous. I definitely need a change, but I am not sure what kind of change I need.
Bangs?

No bangs?

Super short hair?

Chin-length hair?

Flipped out hair?

Longer hair with more layers?
(I have no picture for this scenario)
Help me out! Be brutal, if you must! I need a hair makeover pronto!

How People Find My Blog
1. "Yoga makes me laugh." Well, that's better than it making you ill.
2. "Words used to describe a happy plate." Um, how about "happy"? My thoughts on the happy plate are here.
3. "Afraid I'll be a bad mom." I'm not really sure how this led to my blog, and even when I did a search with the same phrase, I got nothing related to my blog. I am sometimes afraid I will be a bad mom, however, and apparently I'm not alone. :)
4. "Actually yes, I don't have any friends. Will you be my friend?"
5. "Will you be my friend? Check yes or no?" 4 and 5 were no doubt led to this post.
6. "Caught between the moon and New York city." This phrase has landed more people at my blog than perhaps any other, and that's because of this post.
7. "A pap doctor me." Ummmm...
8. "Need to break up night before trip." Oh, don't do that. That's sad.
9. "My preschool blogspot." I'm sure they were disappointed that my blog has nothing to do with preschool, although I have written about Stephen's and my experiences in extended session.
10. "Weight loss quotes Gilmore Girls." I have written on both of those topics, but I'm not sure they really belong together...
Do you know of any funny ways people have found your blogs?

This Entry Brought to You by the Color Purple
I also have another, lesser known love. Allow me to demonstrate with a picture:

Yes, that's right. I love water bottles. The criteria by which I select these bottles is very important. There are a few essentials a bottle MUST have if I am to purchase it:
1. It must hold at least 24 oz. of water. I drink a lot of water, so the less I have to refill a bottle, the better.
2. It must have either a straw or an easy-to-access top. I do not like bottles that just have lids that screw off--too time consuming and annoying. And as mentioned before, I love straws, so I am super excited when I find bottles that have them as well.
3. It must not cost more than $8. I don't want to spend a fortune on something that holds a beverage that costs me nothing.
That's pretty much it. I like a bottle that looks cute, but I have passed up many a pretty bottle for not meeting the above criteria, which is why I am in possession of the first bottle in the above picture. It has a pop-top, a handle, holds 32 oz. of water, and cost me all of $1.50. It's the most boring bottle ever, but it serves its purpose. The third bottle in the picture was my favorite, as it is from SeaWorld (though you wouldn't know this because the genius who took the picture did not face the SeaWorld label toward the camera). Note that I said it was my favorite, however, because over the holiday weekend, my husband and I were in Kohl's, and he directed me to this:

I could almost hear the choir of angels singing for joy. It is not only purple, my favorite color, but it holds a whopping 64 oz. (the recommended daily intake), has a straw and a handle, and also has the ounces measured out on the side of the bottle so I can see how much I have drunk. Plus, it was on sale for $6.99 (50% off). There was nothing to do but purchase it.
Now, the downside to this bottle is its size. When full, it weighs approximately 4.5 pounds (thank you, food scale), and it takes up quite a bit of space in the fridge, especially when combined with the other four bottles, and as my husband pointed out, do I really need 6 bottles in the fridge at a time? No. So I actually got rid of one (not pictured), put another one away, and now there are 4 bottles in the fridge. Still, the new one is my favorite, and I think we're going to be very happy together.

Note: I did not in fact plan to wear purple in this picture. That was just a happy coincidence. :)

Things that Make Me Uncomfortable
1. People attempting to have a conversation with me while we are in the bathroom. In separate stalls. This happened to me earlier in the week, and I'm not sure why, but I just feel very awkward talking while I'm answering nature's call. Can't the conversation wait until we are washing our hands? Or better yet, out of the bathroom?
2. A room full of people I don't know. I am an introvert, so therefore large group gatherings full of people I don't know have the potential for causing me to break out in hives.
3. Making small talk with someone I just met. This is related to #2 in that #3 often occurs while in a room full of people I don't know. I hate trying to think of things to say, and inevitably weather comes up. Why is weather such a universally-agreed-upon topic of conversation? I suppose it's probably one of the only things that can't offend anyone, unless you were to say, "Oh, you're from Florida? I hear they have terrible weather there. All those hurricanes and stuff. Only nuts must live there."
4. Standing ovations in church. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with recognizing people for acts of service, but I just feel like if we're going to be standing up and applauding, shouldn't it be for Jesus and not anyone else?
5. Feeling obligated to stand up during a standing ovation. A few times I have remained seated during a standing O, but I usually guiltily rise with everyone else b/c I don't want people to notice me not standing and think I'm a terrible person who doesn't care about really good choir solos (or even not so good ones)..
6. Long silences. This will happen sometimes when I'm teaching. I'll ask a question, and instead of a response all I get are blank faces. It must be because my questions are so thought-provoking and mind-boggling that they need time to collect their faults. Right? (Either that or they didn't do the reading. But of course they did the reading.) I try to resist answering just to fill in the silence, but if it goes on too long, I just answer my own question.
7. Confrontations / conflict. I am a big wuss. I want everyone to be happy with me at all times. And they are. Except when maybe they're not. I don't like for people to be upset with me, so I'll usually avoid conflict at all costs. I'm aware that this is not healthy, and I work on it (sometimes), but for now it's still something I find very difficult.
8. Making phone calls to people I don't know. This one is definitely revealing my unique quirkiness, but I have this phobia of calling people I don't know or don't see often. I hate making appointments for things like the eye doctor, the dentist, etc. I remember when I was in high school and my mom would ask me to make appointments for these things, and I would beg her to do it instead. And she usually would, until she finally put her foot down and insisted I make my own appointments. Can you believe that? I also hate ordering pizza on the phone. I don't do it; Stephen does. Or he used to, until we began using online ordering.
I was hoping to have a list of 10 things just because that seems like a nice number, but I suppose it's good that I could only think of 8. Perhaps more will come to mind later.
What makes you uncomfortable?

Gilmores and Elephants
For those of you who couldn't care less about Gilmore Girls (and I don't want to hear about it if you're one of them), enjoy this amazing tale about a very special elephant.
Incredible story about an elephant's memory
UPI July 20, 2006
A young man was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from college. While he was walking through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air.
The elephant seemed distressed so the man approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant's foot. There was a large thorn deeply embedded in the bottom of the foot.
As carefully and as gently as he could he worked the thorn out with his hunting knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot. The elephant turned to face the man and with a rather stern look on its face, stared at him. For a good ten minutes the man
stood frozen -- thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned and walked away.
The man never forgot that elephant or the events of that day. Twenty years later the man was walking through the zoo with his teenaged son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to where they are standing at
the rail. The large bull elephant stared at him and lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times, all the while staring at the man. The man couldn't help wondering if this was the same elephant. After a while, it trumpeted loudly; then it continued to stare at him.
The man summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder.
Suddenly the elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of the man's legs and swung him wildly back and forth along the railing, killing him.
Probably wasn't the same elephant.

Raze the Gender Inequality!
I'm feeling random, so now is as good a time as any to discuss a little gender inequality I have observed. Last week I had to buy new razors, and while standing in the aisle at Wal-Mart looking over the myriad of options available to me as a woman, I noticed something interesting. The type of razor I had selected, a Schick razor in a cheery pink color, was also in the men's razor section. As far as I could tell, the only discernible difference between my razor and the male version was the black and grey coloring. One would assume that these razors would be identical in price, right? You would be wrong. The black and grey razor (a 4-pack, just like the package I had selected) was two dollars cheaper than my pink razor. Can anyone explain this to me? I scanned both of the packages rather thoroughly, certain that I was missing some key difference, but I could find none. Am I to believe that women are paying more for a color choice?! Tell me this is not true because it rather infuriates me. I ended up buying the black and grey razor, and it's working quite nicely. I may never buy another "female" razor again, but this means I am destined to a life of bland razors when I could have pretty ones. It's an unjust world we live in.

Simplified Spelling: Anything But Sempull
I read this article today on Yahoo about those who want to change English spelling to make it more like it sounds. Nice idea, but it's never going to work. It would be as successful as something like suddenly switching to the metric system would be. What do you think, Stef (she's an elementary school teacher)? Do you want to start teaching an entirely new way of spelling? Wouldn't that be fun? Apparently even Teddy Roosevelt was pushing for simplified spelling at one point. It's an interesting idea, but I can't see it ever coming to fruition.
In other news, Liz and I saw The Devil Wears Prada tonight, and I liked it a lot. It wasn't quite what I was expecting, which in this case was good.
And I miss Stephen. I wish there was a way to squish the state of TN so that Jackson and Knoxville weren't 5 hours apart. Can someone work on that for me? Thanks so much.

I have to say, watching The Office re-runs is still funnier than watching new episodes of America's Got Talent (I realize they don't come on at the same time, but it was the best comparison I could think of.) That is one lame show. Most summer shows are, really. Do they think people don't care about quality shows in the summer? I for one care about quality year-round. I'm a high-quality woman, after all.
I'm also in a really silly mood. Sorry to subject you all to it. This concludes today's portion of "Erin Acts a Fool." Stay tuned for tomorrow's installment.
This last funny bit courtesy of Stephen.

And I just have to say, I'm SO glad that Bucky is gone from American Idol! The only tragedy is that Mandisa went before him.

Cheaters Never Win
Calling all girls: Have you had your heart broken by an unfaithful man? Post his picture and a list of his misdeeds on the Internet! I tried to go to the site and read some of the entries, but you have to have a user name, and I don't care that much. All jerks are the same; it's the ones who aren't jerks that are different and worth your time.
P.S. I'm in no way implying that only males are jerks; on the contrary, females are equally as capable of being jerks, but it seems that males display their jerkiness more often or in ways that are much sleazier.
P.P.S. Believe it or not, none of this is coming from personal experience. All the guys I know are just idiots. :winky:
EDIT: For a glimpse into the mind of one guy who's not an idiot, visit Moose Max's site.
EDIT 2 (I'm totally procrastinating): I'm so glad I didn't take the SAT. They screwed up some people's scores. Oops. Just goes to show that technology isn't foolproof. (As if any of us had doubts about that.)
And OH MY GOSH, Mandisa, one of the final 8 on American Idol, just admitted to the viewing public that she sucked her thumb until she was TWENTY-FOUR (that's my age). I don't know if she's brave or just stupid for confessing that. Girl can sing, though.

38
New episode of Gilmore Girls tomorrow! All I can say is, it better be good because I'm getting close to mutiny!
EDIT: Sent to me by http://www.xanga.com/fargs. I'm a 38, just like Oprah. That has to be good, right?
Below is Dr Phil's test.
(Dr. Phil scored 55; he did this test on Oprah. She got a 38.)
Some folks pay a lot of money to find this stuff out. Read on, this is
very interesting! Don't be overly sensitive! The following is pretty accurate
and it only takes 2 minutes. Take this test for yourself, change the test score
in the subject box, copy and paste into a new e-mail and send to your friends
including the person who sent it to you. Don't peek! Have pen or pencil and
paper ready. This is a real test given by the Human Relations Dept. at many
of the major corporations today. It helps them get better insight concerning their
employees and prospective employees. It's only 10 simple questions, so....
Grab a pencil and paper, keeping track of your letter answers to each question.

9. (a) 7 (b) 6 (c) 4 (d) 2 (e) 1
10. (a) 4 (b) 2 (c) 3 (d) 5 (e) 6 (f) 1
Now add up the total number of points.
OVER 60 POINTS: Others see you as someone they should "handle with
care." You're seen as vain, self-centered, and extremely dominant. Others
may admire you, wishing they could be more like you, but don't always trust
you, hesitating to become too deeply involved with you.
51 TO 60 POINTS: Others see you as an exciting, highly volatile,
rather impulsive personality; a natural leader, who's quick to make
decisions, though not always the right ones. They see you as bold
and adventuresome, someone who will try anything once; someone who
take chances and enjoys an adventure. They enjoy being in your
company because of the excitement you radiate.
41 TO 50 POINTS: Others see you as fresh, lively, charming,
amusing, practical, and always interesting; someone who's
constantly in the center of attention, but sufficiently well-balanced not to
let it go to their head. They also see you as kind, considerate, and
understanding, someone who'll always cheer them up and help them out.
31 TO 40 POINTS: Others see you as sensible, cautious, careful &
practical. They see you as clever, gifted, or talented, but modest.
Not a person who makes friends too quickly or easily, but someone who's
extremely loyal to friends you do make and who expect the same
loyalty in return. Those who really get to know you realize it takes a lot
to shake your trust in your friends, but equally that it takes you a long
time to get over it if that trust is ever broken.
21 TO 30 POINTS: Your friends see you as painstaking and fussy.
They see you as very cautious, extremely careful, a slow and steady
plodder. It would really surprise them if you ever did something impulsively
or on the spur of the moment, expecting you to examine everything
carefully from every angle and then, usually decide against it. They think this
reaction is caused partly by your careful nature.
UNDER 21 POINTS: People think you are shy, nervous, and indecisive,
someone who needs looking after, who always wants someone else to
make the decisions & who doesn't want to get involved with anyone or
anything! They see you as a worrier who always sees problems that
don't exist. Some people think you're boring. Only those who know you
well know that you aren't.
What did you score? Is it accurate? Do you think mine's accurate? Do you think it's all just hogwash?
